When I First Saw You | The Adventurist by J. Bradford Hipps

When I First Saw You (or WIFSY) is a meme held over by Sophie at Sailing through Books and Izel at A Bookish Flower. The aim of the game is to write up a synopsis for a given cover, and then compare it to the actual cover of a book! Sounds fun right?

The Book For This Week is...

The Adventurist, by J Bradford Hipps

My Synopsis

Phillip Andrews has been trapped in the Building his entire life. The Building and its mysteries are all Phillip has ever known. Most days, he hates being stuck in the Building, with only his raggedy bear to hold and the mysterious Voice to talk to. On other days, on the days the Voice decrees are Challenge days though, Phillip loves living in the Building.

Challenge days are exactly what their name suggests - days filled with challenges. From bomb-defusing stress situations to book reading competitions, Phillip's competitive spirit flares up on these days, and he comes alive.

Until one day, the Voice delivers a challenge like one he has never attempted before: to get out of the building. Phillip is only too happy to oblige - until he realises that leaving the building means leaving all that he has ever known, and that this Challenge is probably one of the hardest he will ever attempt - the Building won't let him go that easily.

A touching story about facing challenges, making difficult choices, growing up and moving on, by J. Bradford Hipps.

The Actual Synopsis

In the anonymous office park of a modern software company, whip-smart software engineer Henry Hurt is a man in the middle: of life, of career, of self-assessment. Mired in his corporate responsibilities, Henry's deathless office existence is torpedoed by losing his mother.

Overcome by "the pall," Henry seeks escape in a quest for love and purpose occasioned by a crisis in his company's fortunes. Dodging an Iago-like rival, he finds love with a colleague in his department, endangers his bond with his family, and finally confronts the single urgent question of his life.

The Adventurist is about relationships: Henry has complicated ones with his sister, Gretchen, who has stayed at home with their father; his lover Jane, a sleek and efficient mirror image of Henry; and a tantalizing potential girlfriend, Karen, the ultimate free spirit. But his relationship to his corporate and familial responsibilities may change his fortunes even more than the women in his life.

So... my synopsis was nothing like the actual synopsis! That's fine haha - at least I got the office setting right??

Keep reading and loving books!
